This programme is dedicated to delivering quality Masters business education through innovative instruction, practical teaching, mentoring, and applied research. The programme fully develops business Masterss to be competitive in both the public and private sectors.

Overview

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a general management programme that prepares students for careers in management and leadership in the business, public and non-profit sectors. The MBA curriculum while rigorous provides both a practical as well as the traditional academic business foundation combined with the appropriate analytical tools for intelligent and ethical decision making. Classes are taught by highly-qualified, experienced professors who are capable of analysing real world problems and identifying solutions for these problems.

The MGU-HIPS MBA is structured as a full time and part-time. The part time programme is for working professionals. All Masters classes meet during the evening hours, Monday-Friday. Most MBA candidates will be able to complete the programme in two years on a part-time basis, by taking two to three semester hour courses per semester.

Students with non-business Bachelor degrees may be required to take up to 18 additional credits (six, three-hour courses) to earn the MBA. The Meridian Higher Institute of Professional Studies (MGU-HIPS) MBA has two components, the general component and the speciality component. The general component is a common base for all candidates irrespective of the specialisation. The specific component is designed to enhance skills in that particular discipline.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the MBA Programme, a candidate must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and submit a complete application to the Office of Academic Affairs. Only completed applications will be reviewed by the MBA Committee. A complete application consists of the following:

  • 1. Masters Application for Admission Form
  • 2. Official copies of all Bachelor and Masters transcripts
  • 3. A 500-800 words statement of purpose
  • 4. Two letters of recommendations
  • 5. Medical certificate of fitness
  • 6. Current resume highlighting professional and personal accomplishments as well as linguistic abilities, computer expertise, and leadership experience
  • 7. 50,000 frs application fee

Admission Requirements

  • a. Admission into the MBA shall follow the general admission requirement the Meridian Higher Institute of Professional Studies (MGU-HIPS).
  • b. Candidates must hold at least second class lower division first degree in any field related in economics and management or any other qualification deemed equivalent by the Meridian Higher Institute of Professional Studies (MGU-HIPS).
  • c. Candidates with any other qualification not deemed equivalent may be required to take additional Bachelor and/or postMasters course (s) deemed relevant by the Meridian Higher Institute of Professional Studies (MGU-HIPS). The admission of such candidates shall be confirmed subjects to the successful completion of the required additional course(s).
  • The degree of MBA.is awarded in recognition of the successful completion of a programme of supervised research, culminating in a Capstone Project, which demonstrates originality and critical judgment. In order to progress to the second year of the MBA. programme, the student must attain a required level of performance in the assessed course units and must have achieved satisfactory progress in the development of the Capstone Project.

Other specifics include:

  • (i) A candidate must present a research proposal at the start of the second semester Such a proposal must be successfully defended in the presence of the candidate's supervisors and at least one member of staff appointed by the department before he/she is given permission to proceed with the research. At the end of the defence, a proposal shall be graded as follows:
    • i. Adequate
    • ii. Inadequate
    • iii. Poor
    Candidates whose proposals are graded inadequate would be required to improve on the quality of their proposals. Those whose proposals are graded poor will be asked to withdraw from the programme.
  • (ii) In addition to the proposal, the candidate must present at least one seminar paper in his/her area of research any time before the date of submission of Capstone Project for examination.
  • (iii) Candidates with any other qualification not deemed equivalent (see item 1 (ii)) should be required to obtain a minimum pass mark in those additional course(s) they may be required to undertake by the Department.
  • (iv) The Capstone Project shall be orally examined by a panel of at least one external examiner and two internal examiners including the candidate's supervisor. The examiners shall be appointed by the Department subject to the approval of the PostMasters Committee.
  • (v) The MBA's degree shall be awarded to candidates who have earned at least 96 credits including a Capstone Project resulting from research work, which shall be defended before a duly appointed panel.
  • (vi) Upon admission, a candidate shall be assigned a main supervisor and a second, supervisor who are deemed competent in the candidate's chosen area of research.

Course duration and minimum GPA:

Students are required to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours maintaining a minimum GPA of at least 2.00 ('C' grade or 50% marks) per semester. To earn credit for a course at the MBA. level, the student must score at least a C grade. The normal duration of the programme is four semesters (two years). The 120 credit hours are divided as follows:

  • • Compulsory courses 72
  • • Elective courses 24
  • • Capstone Project 24

Medium of Instruction, ONLINE and ONSITE

English and French shall be the medium of instruction and examinations. Candidates are expected to maintain a minimum attendance of 70% to qualify for examinations. Lectures would be scheduled on weekly days.
